Saint Peter and Saint Paul

The 29th of June is celebrated in many different countries as the Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Here in Peru, it’s a work holiday for most, and is celebrated with various masses and devotionals.
If you’re like me and spent your childhood going to Sunday School, then you probably remember that Saint Peter was a fisherman before he started hanging out with Jesus and is the patron saint of fishermen. The coast of Peru is populated with fishermen, and St. Peter is very near and dear to them. They hold processionals, where they march down to the seashore in his honor. In Chimbote, they hold a whole week long celebration with parades and concerts, which culminates in a ‘processional at sea’ with a statue of St. Peter in the lead boat.
Seriously – how many times did I just type fisherman?
We went to the market today to pick up a few things for dinner, and they had an alter, candles and chairs set up to do a mass later. There were already a couple of women sitting in the chairs waiting for mass to begin.
So, happy St. Peter/St. Paul Day – And hug a fisherman!
