How My Life in Peru Spent Our Weekend

Posted on | July 6, 2010 | 7 Comments

I’ve been so busy lately hanging out with my sister that I haven’t had much of a chance to blog about it – so I’m just going to throw out a quick rundown of things we’ve been doing.

Saturday, we went out to lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, El Sabor del Gordo, over in Surquillo on Av. Principal (about 3 blocks from the Plaza Vea on Angamos).  I had my regular, the bistek a la pobre and my sister had her regular, the lomo saltado.

My niece, Gibson, had this delicious aji de gallina

My husband had the tacu tacu, smothered with lomo saltado -

Sunday we went out to eat chicharron over on Av. Dante.  This isn’t the restaurant we went to, but we loved the sign!

Finally, on Monday, we did something I’ve been wanting to do for months!  We made the trip to Lima’s Cono Norte (Northern Cone) to Comas, where we paid a visit to the huge Unicachi market.  They had great prices on everything – meats and produce were all less expensive than there are here in central Lima at the markets.  But, I’m not sure if the prices are low enough to warrant that long drive.  Textiles were also cheaper – we got slippers, towels and socks for much less than we pay here near the house.  It might be worth it to go out once a month.  If you live near, I’d definitely recommend a visit – while it’s a market, it’s almost like shopping in a grocery store – they even have shopping carts to push around!

Buying butter in UnicachiThis is me, making a purchase – some mantequilla Gloria, for about 50 centimos less than Plaza Vea.

Look how clean and organized everything is!

Even the tomatoes were organized – Amazing!

Garlic Cloves

I’d never seen so much peeled and ready garlic in one spot in my life!  If the vampires attack, this is where I’m going.

This is a lot of pictures for one day, so I’ll cut this off now and post more tomorrow.  If you live in the northern part of Lima, I really recommend the Unicachi market.  They also have a market near the Barrio Chino here in El Centro, so I’m going to check it out too, and see how the prices are.

Me too. Kelly, you should start guiding Tours of the markets. I have not been to a market in decades! (I mean it). Larry should also visit one real ‘mercado.’

I LOVE going to the market – as long as it’s relatively clean. I can’t stand the Surquillo market over here in the Barrio Medico – it smells so bad in there.

I hope you don’t mind people you don’t even know looking at your blog! I stumbled across your blog awhile back and have really been enjoying it. I am also married to a Peruvian and although we are currently living in the States, we are planning to move back to Peru at some point. I have visited many times to Peru but have never lived there and I really enjoy peeking in at what life is like for an expat in Peru. Thanks!
