An Expat Mom Shares Her Experiences with Peruvian Life, Travel and Food

Baby Clothes and Toys in Lima

Posted on | April 25, 2011 | 9 Comments

Living in Peru, you get used to things you consider “everyday” being hard – if not impossible – to find. In other cases, you might be able to find items you’re looking for but the prices are just ridiculously high.

Now, for a lot of things – say Cheddar cheese – you can get by. While it’s gotten easier to find in the last year or so, it’s still pretty expensive – so we just don’t buy it often.  Or large size shoes – you learn to stock up when you go home so you don’t have to worry about it while you’re here.

But what do you do when you’ve got a new baby? You can’t really make runs back and forth every month to buy the items you need. And a lot of baby items in Peru – especially toys and strollers – are expensive.

That’s where La Ronda de los Niños has stepped in to help.  La Ronda is a new store that buys and sells gently used baby items.  Their philosophy is threefold:

  1. To help families save money by having products at a reasonable cost, and also by allowing families to sell the items they no longer need.
  2. To protect the environment by keeping baby items out of the landfill for as long as possible. In addition, they sell eco-friendly new items along with the second hand merchandise. You can find items like organic cotton clothing for the whole family.
  3. To help the less fortunate – to this end, they conduct sales to raise money to help out the kids at La Casa Hogar Los Gorriones.

There are a number of ways that you can purchase from La Ronda. The easiest is their online store, which is great for expat moms who may have a difficult time getting around Lima with a baby in arms. Make your purchase online, and they’ll deliver to you house within about 2 days.

If you prefer, you can go to the store – by appointment only.  Finally, they have a large sale the last Saturday of every month.  The next sale is this Saturday, the 30th of April, in Miraflores, Calle Enrique Palacios 758, in front of Papa John´s restaurant, Av. Comandante Espinar.

What a great idea. I found I got almost everything I needed from my husband’s extensive family; some were presents bought new and some were second hand. I think the only thing I actually bought was a state of the art push-chair. Cot, play-pen, carriers, toys and clothes we got given. When my babies grew up, we passed all the hardware on to my husband’s nephew who’d just had twins and the clothes went to Ica after the earthquake. Every Xmas my children’s school does a collection of clothes and toys to take out to rural areas. I love how little waste there is compared to the UK.

I do love the way everyone reuses things here. I’ve never thrown out anything of our boys – I just save stuff in bags for when some church group eventually comes by asking for any used stuff we might have.

Sure, how can we waste things when we know that our planet is suffering from our hugh consumptions of (sometimes) useless things and when we know that somebody can need what we do not need anymore ?
